Adobe Flash (commonly referred to as Flash), is widely recognised as the most popular method in use for adding interaction, movies, sound etc. to standard web-pages. Almost every web-page on the internet today will almost certainly contain Flash somewhere within it and as a matter of course, almost everyone who has a computer with internet access will have Flash Player installed. Another reason for it’s popularity is that it runs consistently on a variety of operating systems and web-browsers.

Flash first started life as a drawing application called SmartSketch in the 1980s and was designed to aid the creation of simple computer graphics. Needless to say, computers of that time were in early stages of development, so were are talking ‘simple’. It was first given the name Flash in 1996 by Macromedia.

Flash is not a stand-alone application. By that I mean you will need a web development application into which you can incorporate Flash modules. However, in saying that, an entire website could be built entirely out of Flash, but this would be somewhat restrictive, in that other software packages available provide for a lot more versatility.

Interestingly, you will see Flash in use not only on websites, but also on some hand-held devices such as mobile phones and PDAs. The screen you first see when you turn on your phone will probably be a Flash movie in it’s simplest form.
